Vera's  DESSERTS

About Us

Vera Davis Ford was born December 16, 1915 in Helena, Arkansas.  At the age of five, Vera's  parents relocated to Memphis, Tennessee.  After graduation from  Booker T. Washington High School, Vera worked as a pastry girl at the World famous Peabody Hotel.  There she met her future husband Newton Jackson Ford who was employed as the keeper of the legendary Peabody ducks.  They were soon married and began there fifty three year union.

Vera birthed fifteen children while establishing a successful business with her husband.  Cooking three large meals a day for such a large family, Vera tapped into the God given gift of releasing love through food.  Vera not only shared this gift with her family, but she also fed the hungry.  She could not bare to see anyone going without food.  When she prepared meals, even when times were hard, she would prepare plates for those in the neighborhood that she knew were hungry.

Vera would prepare pies from the fruits and berries picked out of her own yard.  Vera  never thought that dinner was complete without at least two desserts.  She became famous for her delicious pies, cakes, irresistible food, and tasty treats.  Every Sunday evening friends and family would gather at her home to partake of the celebratory
dinner that was suited for a king.  Dinner would include six or seven vegetables, three or four different meats, spaggetti was a side dish, corn bread, rolls, biscuits, at least two pies, two cakes, ginger bread, banana pudding, and always jello.  Every Sunday was a holiday.  Actual holiday's just meant a couple more vegetables and a few more cakes and pies.  She knew how to keep her family together.  She did it by bringing them together every week to fellowship and show her love through food.  Vera's recipes have been passed down from generation to generation.   We at Vera's Desserts want to share with the world the incredible unforgettable recipes that  were so lovingly created in the hands of a woman of great strength and who was truly gifted in the area of cooking.  The tradition of scrumptious mind blowing food continues with unmatched quality, freshness, and taste.
